Married couples may apply to adopt jointly, and single applicants may also be considered on the merits of their circumstances. Applicants are generally at least 25 years old and at least 21 years older than the child, while a relative may apply from the age of 21. Every application is assessed with the best interest of the child as the paramount consideration.

What are the requirements for adoption?

For in-country adoption, applicants typically provide evidence of marriage (if applicable), a birth certificate, a medical/health certificate, a police clearance report, evidence of employment or income, two reference letters, a copy of national identification, spousal consent (if applicable), a statement of commitment from two guardians ad litem, and photographs and audio recordings of the family and home. Relative adoptions also require proof of relationship with the child.

How does the adoption process work?

You begin by obtaining information about eligibility and the process. You then complete an application with a police criminal clearance and a medical screening report, take part in a home study that produces a report on your background and circumstances, and complete adoption-related training (at least thirty hours for in-country adoption). Matching, placement and the legal steps to formalise the adoption follow.

How long does the adoption process take?

There is no fixed or guaranteed timeframe. The length depends on your circumstances, the type of adoption and the statutory assessments involved. We keep you informed at each stage so you always know what is happening and what comes next.

Can people living outside Ghana adopt (inter-country adoption)?

Yes. Inter-country applicants must first be approved as eligible and suitable in the receiving State. The Central Authority or accredited agency of that State then submits the approved home study report to the Central Adoption Authority in Ghana for approval to adopt in Ghana, after which application forms are completed.

What documents may be required?

Common documents include a birth certificate, medical/health certificate, police clearance report, evidence of income, reference letters, national identification and spousal consent where applicable. Inter-country adoption additionally requires a home study report and a letter of approval from the Central Authority of the receiving State. We give every family a personalised checklist.

What assessments are involved?

The central assessment is the home study, which considers your background, circumstances and home environment and leads to a written report. Applicants also complete adoption-related training and provide medical and police clearances.

Can single people adopt?

A single person may apply to adopt and will be considered on the merits of their circumstances, always guided by the best interest of the child.

Can married couples adopt?

Yes. A married couple may apply to adopt jointly, with the consent of both spouses.

What happens after I make an enquiry?

A member of our team responds to understand what you are looking for and answers your questions. If you decide to explore further, we guide you through information, eligibility and the first steps at your own pace. Making an enquiry does not begin a formal application or guarantee a placement.

Can I speak with someone before starting the process?

What is the difference between adoption and other forms of child care?

Adoption is a legal process that gives a child a permanent new family and full family rights, whereas arrangements such as fostering or kinship care provide care without the same permanent legal change. We can help you understand which path best serves a child’s needs.
